For a more gentle approach to
physical health why not try Yoga – the union of mind and body.
Whatever your age,
ability, gender or belief system, Yoga has something for everybody. Yoga
has a wide range of techniques to enhance your well-being, personal and
spiritual growth. This is especially true in our fast-moving lifestyle,
for which Hatha Yoga is ideally suited. Hatha Yoga makes the best use
of synchronising breathing whilst working through a range of postures.
The very act of focusing on posture and breathing serves to promote a
relaxed feeling. Yoga classes, which need no more special equipment than
a Yoga mat, usually last for an hour and a half, at the end of which
there is a progressive relaxation or meditation period.
So – if you’ve not yet made
any resolutions this year, why not seek to challenge your body whilst
treating yourself to some badly-needed inner peace?
Unlike any other activity,
Yoga has the ability to harmonise your physical, mental and spiritual
fitness all at the same time.

So when Christmas is over
and the answer to “who ate all the pies” is inescapably you, why not
take up a sport that will give you a sense of purpose, as well as help
you shift those unwanted pounds.
The thought of taking up
Martial Arts for fun may sound like an oxymoron but it can be a good way
to get fit – there is nothing like hitting a punch bag to deal with that
post Christmas stress! You can either escape the family for an hour or
bring them with you. Anyone from age 5 – 75 can do it. Never think you
are too old!
There are numerous forms
of martial arts around today, all of which are excellent for building
self confidence, practicing self discipline, and giving you the
opportunity of learning to defend yourself in a controlled environment.
Most styles involve some form of contact – from throwing in judo and
jujitsu to controlled sparring and bag work in karate and taekwondo.
You can pick a style that is very disciplined and traditional or
something more sports orientated like kick boxing which will give you an
excellent cardio vascular workout.
If you want to try a free
karate class (usually £5) come along to St Johns School, Pendleton Road
on a Sunday at midday and see what you think.
