January 2008

In January and February it’s mostly Panto time and creative bargain hunting in the Sales, so Art Exhibitions and events are rather thin on the ground if you look very hard . . .

Why not take a trip to the fascinating Watts Gallery in Compton which houses the studio collection of the famous Victorian painter and sculptor G F Watts – nicknamed England’s Michelangelo: Also collected works by his contemporaries Burne-Jones, Leighton, Sargent and Morris, and pottery by Mary Watts. Don’t miss the stunning circular celtic/art nouveau chapel she had built for the new Compton village cemetery (Open to the public daily, but check gallery times on 01483 810235) wattsgallery@yahoo.co.uk

Another intriguing place to visit is the Fire and Iron Gallery at Rowhurst Forge, Oxshott Road Leatherhead Tel: 01372 386453. Open all year round Mon - Sat 10.00am – 5.00pm Closed Suns and most Bank Hols.

Here you can see an incredible collection of work by metal artists, from delicate jewellery to life size steel animals and ornate beds, all housed in the outbuildings of a beautiful 1450’s farmhouse.

Hundreds of unique metalworks plus special exhibitions to complement the permanent displays: also the occasional Blacksmithing demonstrations in the purpose built arena (check beforehand for details)
